My husband came home for lunch, today, and we quickly tested out GameRanger to see how it works with Borderlands. I'm happy to report that it's a no sweat, easy solution to multiplayer problems that doesn't involve having to mess with port forwarding. Woot! Now, maybe we'll be able to get together with some of our other friends. We had just been duoing over LAN, up til now. :)
As much as I love Borderlands, it has problems with online multiplayer. My husband and I could play just fine over LAN mode but, the second we tried to connect to someone out on the interwebs, the game denied us the pleasure. We'd get a "connecting" message followed by a countdown and a time out.
Looking around the internet, we found the solution listed as opening ports and mucking with port forwarding. Now, that's not really something that I'm keen on messing with. So, I went looking for a different solution.
I was fortunate enough to be pointed towards a 3rd party program called GameRanger that basically acts as a go-between for people wanting to connect. I don't know all the technical hoo-haa for exactly how it works but I know that it's simple and easy to run. And, I can now play with my friends all over the world!
If both people have GameRanger (which is a free application), you just make a room within GameRanger and everyone who wants to play joins there. Then, the host cranks up the game from within GameRanger and the 3rd party program does the rest. Everyone is able to join in and play.
